My Own House / You Should See the Rest of the Band

David-Bromberg-My-Own-House---You-Should-See-the-Rest-of-the-Band

As of the late 1990s, guitarist and fiddler David Bromberg was in musical semi-retirement, supplementing his day job (making his living buying and selling American-made violins) with the odd club gig. But in the 1970s, he had a thriving career as both a bandleader and a sideman, having played on seminal recordings by Bob Dylan, the Eagles, and Jerry Jeff Walker, among others. This disc includes two of his early albums: first, the acoustic and largely solo My Own House, on which he plays a program that ranges from traditional Scottish and American fiddle tunes through Delta blues and songs by Hoagy Carmichael and Phil Spector. Talk about Americana. The second album included on this disc couldn't be more of a contrast: You Should See the Rest of the Band is a live recording with a large and very definitely electric band.

Live New York City 1982

David-Bromberg-Live-In-New-York-City-1982

Live New York City 1982, originally pulled from David Bromberg’s tape stash for limited edition sales a few years back, is the only album to date by the bluegrass-oriented David Bromberg Quartet (DBQ), but it sounds as fresh as if recorded on their current spring/summer tour. Newly remastered for re-release on Appleseed, and now sporting droll, informative liner notes by David, Live NYC 1982 features three of the current members of the Quartet – Bromberg (vocals, guitar, fiddle, mandolin), award-winning fiddler Jeff Wisor (also mandolin, harmony vocals), and “Butch” Amiot (bass guitar, harmony vocals) – and Gene Johnson (mandolin, fiddle, harmony vocals), who now plays with the successful country/bluegrass band Diamond Rio and was eventually replaced by ex-Greenbriar Boy Bobby Tangrea.

Reckless Abandon, Bandit In a Bathing Suit (Remastered)

reckless

In 1998, Fantasy released Reckless Abandon/Bandit in a Bathing Suit, which contained two complete albums — Reckless Abandon (1977, originally released on Fantasy) and Bandit in a Bathing Suit (1978, originally released on Fantasy) — by David Bromberg on one compact disc.

The Player: A Retrospective

theplayer

The Player: Retrospective is an incomplete but effective summary of David Bromberg's career, containing the majority of his best songs. It is true that some personal favorites, such as "The New Lee Highway Blues" may be missing — and this may be a sticking point, since Bromberg fans are very dedicated — but most of the important songs — "Sharon," "The Hold Up," "Mr. Bojangles," "Sammy's Song," "The Joke's on Me," "Wallflower" — are here, making this a fine replacement for the earlier compilation, Out of the Blues, as well as a good introduction for the curious.

How Lat'll Ya Play Til? (VOL. 1)

how-latll-1

Recorded live at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on June 18-19, 1976.

David Bromberg has been such an effective sideman for so long, it could be possible to not notice what a wonderful entertainer the man is when he is at center stage. How Late'll Ya Play 'Til?, Vol. 1 catches Bromberg and a crack band having a fine time on mostly humorous tunes. Of course, Bromberg does play guitar throughout the album, but the real attraction here is his bluesy vocal turns and his razor-sharp comedic timing. Though "Will Not Be Your Fool" is his signature piece and is very well performed here, the highlight is the incredible "Bullfrog Blues."
